In pulmonary physiology, a mixture of phospholipids (chiefly lecithin and sphingomyelin) secreted by the alveolar type-II cells into the alveoli and respiratory air passages which reduces the surface tension of pulmonary fluids and thus contributes to the elastic properties of pulmonary tissue.
